Investigation
In this task, each student is to look at common problems around them which occur often in their community. In accordance to this, I decided to talk on the topic drunk driving, this is a problem in society and puts a lot of human lives at risk.
Subjects
The subjects chosen in relation to the topic are:
a) alcohol beverages
b) the vehicle
c) death
Alcohol Beverages
Alcoholic beverages contain primary alcohol substance known as ethyl alcohol or ethanol. Many people take alcohol without thinking of the implications.
The truth about alcohol is that it is a drug and considered as a depressant, it slows down vital functions hence resulting in slurred speech, unsteady movement, disturbed perceptions and the inability to react quickly.
Though it is a drug the effect it has on the individual is dependent on the quantity consumed. People take alcohol to ease up or relax but when it is taken overdose it could lead to the individual experiencing the depressant effect of the alcohol.
Alcohol has other effects when overdosed; the inability to feel pain, toxicity, unconsciousness, comma and in some cases death. Some alcohol could also lead to obesity for instance pint beer.
Alcoholic beverages and their alcohol content
Beer 2-6% alcohol
Cider 4-8% alcohol
Wine 8-20% alcohol
Tequila 40% alcohol
Rum 40% alcohol
Brandy 40% alcohol
Gin 40-47% alcohol
Whiskey 40-50% alcohol
Vodka 40-50% alcohol
Liqueurs 15-60% alcohol
The effects of the alcohol as shown above are some of the causes of accidents on our roads which take a lot of lives or sometimes cause a lot of injuries.
Vehicle
The term vehicle is one used for any means of transportation from your personal bicycle to the airplane that flies in the sky. The main vehicle being addressed in the topic is the car since most often they are involved in a lot of major road accidents.
The car is mechanical and is mostly controlled by the driver though some cars today seem to have a mind of their own. It is therefore the drivers duty to control the car, the driver should be able to know when to speed up, when to step on the breaks, when to change lanes on the road among other things.
It therefore becomes difficult to be in charge when the driver is under the influence of alcohol. As seen above, the effects of alcohol would make it difficult for the driver to react to situation, he would also feel light headed hence leading to misdirection which would eventually result in accidents.
Death
Death is something we all, at least most of everyone around us is afraid of. It is the taking away of life and no one would like to experience it prematurely. According to the
Worldometer counter as at the time I checked had recorded
963,067 deaths caused by drunk driving this year. This data is based on data gathered from the
World Health Organisation ( W.H.O.) and the number keeps increasing.
These deaths bring grief to families who loose loved ones and also cause the government to spend money on bills for bodies which are not claimed by families.
Objective.
My main aim is to use this to serve as campaign to let drivers and everyone know the effects of alcohol not only on the individual but also on the government especially for developing countries.
