Contemporary Design Issues

Reflection

This task was not too easy because it was fully academic. It taught me how to go about a research paper and what it entails. I personally have also learnt more about things I did not know in photography and has given me the chance to build on my confidence.
My peers can also build on their presentation skills and I am sure have also learnt quite a lot from their individual research. Also the peer criticism has allowed us share ideas on hoe to better ourselves as designers.
I can apply research to any of my modules to find out more about it and also write a report or a journal about my understanding on various design issues.

Contemporary Design Issues

After the seminar I was reminded by my tutor on how it was vital for me to put in citations and references in my report. He also commended us on a good work done.
We also got the chance to share opinions and ideas and also criticize each others work, this was very insightful since we were able to teach each other something new.
I went ahead to finish with my research paper and get it ready for submission.

Contemporary Design Issues

`I went out to collect all viable data in relation to my topic. I went on the internet and read some journals, ask my friends their opinion on the topic, printed a few hand outs and basically that was how I gathered my data.
After this I started putting everything together, making records and started preparing my research paper.
I also took some pictures of my own which I used to explain to my tutors and peers at a seminar, my topic and my argument.

Contemporary Design Issues

After studying our various designers, we were asked to come up with topics and do a research argumentative report paper on. My initial topic was " Is Photography Art ?" This topic after discussing with my tutor explained to me how it was not much of an issue so I had to come up with a new topic.
My new topic was "The Effects of Social Media on Photo Journalism." I went back to my tutor and he gave me the go ahead to start doing my research on the topic.
Before research begun we were taught how to do a research. In the process of my research my tutor suggested that I go a little deeper into my topic so I decided to change my topic to "The Effects of Social Media on Photo Journalism and The Role of Photo Retouching."
I took up this topic and begun my research immediately.

Contemporary Design Issues

We were given a wide range of designers and asked to study one of our choice. I chose Thomas Burden. This is a young designer who uses 3D characters to explain his world around him. Most of the images are created by him and he develops his ideas with software.
He also does beautiful illustrations and sign boards as well as posters.
This designer is a very creative one and I would like to learn from him to also become as good as he is and even better.

Final Aesthetic

After a series of experimentation, the title and idea for my final work for aesthetics was developed. This took quite some time to do since initially I found it a little confusing as to what was expected from me.
The title for the final work was " Unity ".  The idea for this came from one of my previous images of a meeting place with no one seated there. This made me follow the theme of unity to show that anyone no matter how differently raced we are could come together, put aside our differences and make thee world a beautiful place.
The other images were derived from magazines. Ty were cut out an scanned. Also whiles scanning I was able to find out that I could make some beautiful wavy patterns if I simply kept moving the scanned paper up and down the scanner whiles scanning. These patterns I did use for my final image to give it a beautiful look. Also I crumpled some of the papers before scanning to see the kind of effects I was going to derive.
At the end of the day this task help me understand the use of mixed media concept in design since it one of the important concepts designers today must employ in their works. Though it was confusing at the start thing certainly got better at the ending.

Museum, Gallery and Heritage

Kampon Hakka

This place is situated and behind the Mantin township. It is a quiet and undeveloped area with less activity going on there almost as if it were a ghost town in a horror movie.
However, the people who reside there seem to be content. They have refused to move though many attempts have been made by the government to evacuate them from this premises.
The major reason why they refuse to leave is that, they were born here and do not have the money to find other places to live since they most comfortable in their current settlements.
The buildings, though there are about just two modern looking buildings are mostly patched up and old. Some of them are abandoned and others patched up.
Despite this, there is a certain beauty to the place such as the little stream which runs under the bridge to the pretty flowers in the grass.

Reflection

This module was fun since we took trips out of school, but through this fun I acquired a lot of knowledge on how to exhibit my art works as both artist and designer. I have been able to see a few museums and galleries and I can now state clearly the difference between these two.
Someway, somehow this module has helped me build on my confidence and presenting skills since it is a curators duty not only to take care or art works and space but also be able to explain to the audience the motive of the artists in their works. My peers should use this platform to also build on their own skills on presentation and knowledge on art.
I have been able to learn the historical past of Mantin and also I have been giving a chance to help save it by making an installation art as a campaign to stop developers from destroying it.

We finally finished our installation and were ready to present. I was chosen as curator by my peers and with the skills and knowledge I had acquired in the previous task, I was able to make a good presentation of our work.

Finally I was able to create my model car and also make my video using windows movie maker.

Museum Gallery and Heritage

Kampon Hakka

The black and white picture were used to add to the dark feel of the setting. Also it was to show how old the place is because we were surprised to find a big round old school disk buried in the ground at Kampon Hakka.
We also put a shadow of a boy who seems to be trying to fetch some water out of the well.
Well the shadow was used not a colored image because we wanted the audience to see how scary life at this place could be at the moment with the well being dry.
The well is a symbolism of life and the existence of culture. Hence if it runs dry it means the culture of the people is lost affecting the proof of life in this place.

Kampon Hakka

In our installation though the theme was abandon and required a dark setting, a very gloomy and lonely setting, we put a pot with a flower it.
This is to represent a sense of hope in the people who live them. We may not have spoken to some of the people living there but clearly that was what we noticed, this was when we saw school uniforms being dried outside.
We also realized a natural sense of beauty there, we saw flowers and fruits around.
At this point we realized that though this place is all desolate there could be a chance of restoring liveliness in this place.

Museum Gallery and Heritage

Kampon Hakka

In our installation, we put in items such as a damaged stool and a light bulb. This was to represent the fact that development is necessary in this place to help these people who live there also have a feel of a better life style.
However it not to say these people should be moved out of their homes neither are we saying their settlements should be destroyed. What we are trying to say is that government could put up some infrastructure and fix broken street lamps and fixing pipe lines as well as the road.
This could make the place look more interesting to go to as a tourists attraction site so people could go there, see and learn about the old Mantin, how it begun and how different it is from today.
This can also help the towns people get some money help them better their lives.

Kapon Hakka

We put some sand on the floor to give it the feel of dirt. We also used old scattered dried up coconut all over the floor.
Also we put gravels, dried leaves, old umbrella parts, an old shirt and plastic cup to show the filth gathered at this place.
This is very disturbing since these filth breed mosquitoes and some dangerous reptiles.
But the people in this village are totally oblivious of the fact that this filth can actually affect them.
Again this is because the place is abandoned so nobody really knows what is going on in that place, I am not even sure that people are aware that such a place exists.

Museum Gallery and Heritage

In the installation we used the well to represent and signify life. How people are born in this place and how generations  of families have sprung out of this place.
This is because a well as we all know is a source of water and water represents life. We also wanted to show the well has been dried up hence depicting the effect of desolation of the community.
We also used the well to show how customary it was for everyone there to construct a well in their houses.
This architectural work is amazing and should not be destroyed.

Museum Gallery and Heritage

Kapon Hakka

The setting of the installation is a dark area. The reason for this is that being abandoned means that the place is lonely and desolate.
It showed how under developed the area is and the people there are live as if they are not part of the society.
This dark place has lost its presence of life and how now become like the ghost town of mantin.
It is indeed a dreaded sight to view, very sad and hurting to show how the historical part of Mantin's true heritage is not well catered for and might soon not exist anymore.

So after buying the necessary item, such as strings and gloves, we decided to meet to start working on the installation.
We constructed the platform for the installation and laid the grey material on it. We also hung some of the material as the background.
After we poured some sand on the platform. We also put some of the gathered items from the site on the platform.
We also made a well we saw at the site out of wire mesh and paper.
We also edited some of the images we took at the site to black and white. These images were going to be projected on the grey background.

Kapon Hakka

For the installation we needed items to represent what we saw. I thought we should create some of the things we saw at the site.
However the group leader and some of my peers brought up an idea of us creating our own Kapon Hakka but including some of the items from the site.
We then went back to the site to pick up some of the dirt we saw there.
We also found some wood to use as platform for the installation and also a black material which was going to be used on the platform to represent the ground.
We also contributed some money to buy some items needed for the installation.

After visiting the sight for the site a second time, we came about with a few ways to present our idea and theme.
Some of these ideas included printing out the pictures we took and framing them in the corridor of the department.
We also came up with the idea of using one thing we saw to represent the theme.
Finally we decided to make an installation of what we saw.

After visiting the site, we came back to class to discuss our next step, how to represent Kampon Hakka.
We gathered the images taken from the site and worked our brains around them. We then tried getting a theme for our presentation.
We settled on the theme abandoned. At this point the group leader suggested that we should go back to take a second look at the site to find ways by which we could present our final work.

Digital Design

Reflection

This module has taught me the importance of minimalism in a designers work.
I have also learnt new ways of making images using digital hardware and software like printing.
I have also learnt how to represent subjects in the simplest of ways with icons.
Also I been able to save my work and create my own portfolio.

I would urge my peers to venture into digital design and also try some of these new stuff out.
It will help broaden their minds and help them find simple solutions to problems they face.

Also I can use the portfolio to save some of my other works. I can also employ the use of minimalism to my other modules to help me represent my topic in a simpler way.

Digital Design

Process

I finally was able to construct my first model car. Unfortunately it went wrong. After spraying paint on the car the tape used to hold the joints became weak and started removing.
I had to reconstruct one with only little time remaining.

Digital Design

Process

For the investigation video I initially tried using adobe flash. I later tried after effects but I was not really able to understand how they work.
I later used light room to try and make the video. It turned out to be better since to me it was quite simple to use.
However it was as easy as I thought it was going to be and I had to dedicate a lot of time into seeing it through.

Digital Design

Process

I really did not find it easy with this task, investigation. I faced another difficulty when it came to making the video.
I had not done this before and was very tensed. I decided to watch a couple of youtube videos to assist me.
Though it was not easy it was very necessary that I got acquainted with it because the video is the core of my presentation for this task.

Digital Design

Investigation

The finale of this work is going to be presented with me projecting the timeline video I made through the wind screen of a car. Also I would use sound to tell the story of a driver who moves from the bar to the his car, till he crushes.
I would also add a scene of fire and red paint dripping down to represent blood and the scene of a fatal accident.
The car is going to be made from cardboard boxes with light in it.

Digital Design

Investigation

I faced some difficulty here. The constructing of the car came as a challenge to me. I tried watching a few videos on you tube on how to make a cardboard box car but they did not seem to be of much help.
I had quite a lot of hustle trying to figure out what to do with the boxes. I was very confused since I had no idea on how to go about it.

Digital Design

Portfolio

So in this task I had to assist a classmate on how to use wix to create his portfolio. It was not a hard thing to do since it came to him simple and understood it quite fast.
Ironically I who was teaching him faced some difficulties of my own. After designing a couple of web portfolios, the site just refused to load. I created about two portfolios and anytime after I am done or I am about to finish with the last page everything seems to go wrong. This really got me very stressed.

Portfolio

A portfolio is a form of record keeping and a good way of keeping information about ones life and works.
In this task, the student is to make his own portfolio, where he is to keep records of all his semester work for this module.
Students are to use software such as Adobe After effects or some web templates such as wix.
In my case I decided to use wix.

Digital Design

Idea 2

For the second idea I decided to make a timeline video of a busy road. So I set out to a couple of places with my camera and other equipment to capture a couple of busy road scenes.
This was a little difficult for me since I had to take these pictures with five seconds interval and I did not have a timing device so I had to use the stop watch on my phone to time myself and take these pictures manually.
The ration behind this idea is that at night we see cars moving up and down the roads to and fro, and in my perspective a drunk driver would barely see cars he might probably just see lights moving around.
I am going to project the timeline video from slow to fast. Also I am going to add some sound to try help tell a story of a drunk driver from him drinking till the accident. Also I would take pictures of a flame and red paint pouring down, to represent an accident and blood or the loss of life.

Digital Design

Investigation

Idea 1

I put down quite a number of ideas before starting work on this new topic. Eventually I decided to try and work with two.
The first idea was to create some posters with my own characters and graffiti lettering.
The reason why I chose this type of lettering is because graffiti is a well known street art and drivers are bound to drive mainly on streets hence the ration behind the lettering.
The character in the posters are to signify life or the presence of human live and the community.
They are to show or depict how society frowns down on drunk driving.

These images were going to be printed out like sign posts for my final presentation.

Digital Design

Investigation

After discussing my topic with my tutor I was brought to notice that my approach to this task was wrong. I was made to understand that my understanding of the task was not in line with the aims of this task so I decided to find a new topic.
This time around after I arrived at an all new topic I discussed it with my peers. They gave me ideas on how to go about the new topic how to present it and the kind of materials I could use to present the topic.
After I put my ideas forward to my tutor who then gave me the go ahead to start work on the new topic.
The new topic was drunk driving.
