20th CENTURY DESIGN, TASK 2

“You cannot comprehend Dada, you have to experience it. Dada is immediate and self-evident. A person is a Dadaist simply by living. Dada is the neutral point between content and form, female and male, matter and mind, because it is the apex of the magic triangle above the linear polarity of human objects and notions.” – Richard Huelsenbeck

Dadaism

It is said by many people that dadaism is  form of art which has no story or basis, the truth is this theory is a lie. Dadaism is a historical movement which occurred as an effect of the first World War. It was developed in 1916, in Zurich. It is a violent and repulsive form of art. It is set out to ridicule good and already finished works of existing artist. Many people react disgusted, insulted and disturbed at the sight of this art because its main aim to make nonsense out of a culture. This form of art begun with a group of people known as avant - gardist. As a result of having a hard time naming this form of art, these group of people had to settle for Dada, which sounds like the talk of a baby, which is nonsense more or less.
Normally in a work of dada the artist, adds obscurities to his work to make them repulsive. The artist would usually leave inscriptions which are very insulting and repulsive. This is to send out a message of disgust in the culture during that time. They also used colors, shapes and objects to destroy the beauty of existing cultural arts. Normally the audience would feel very disgusted by the work. these works may also be humorous and very funny.
Eventually this form of art was later accepted not only as insulting but also a creative approach to artistic thinking. In modern dada, artist do not put obscurities in their works neither do they use abusive language. Instead with the application of shapes and colors, they create very interesting art which can also send out the same messages as that of their predecessors. They can be funny but not abusive. Modern forms of dada also take the forms of collages. An example of a great dadaist was Marcel Du Champ.

Reflection

I form my point of view regards dada as a very creative art form. Though abusive sometimes I find it very necessary because it is a platform to express an individual's feelings towards a particular era or governance or situation.

ACADEMIC SKILLS

A lot of people get nervous when asked to do presentations. This causes them to mess up or disgrace themselves when doing presentations even if they have something good to present to their audience.
This task therefor is structured to help an individual boost his or her morale when making a presentation. Most of  the problems faced by people which destroys their presentations no matter how good it is, is due to lack of confidence so they tend to fumble and can not be as fluent as they desire to. This task serves as a life saver to such people, it teaches how to prepare oneself for presentations to avoid messing up.
It also teaches how the audience must be involved in the presentation as if it were a conversation by performing gestures and making your presentation more interesting, so that the audience can understand and relate to you topic for presentation. Also this task teaches how to be ready and prepared for various questions you would be asked by your audience and how to respond to them in a correct manner.
This task in conclusion is one which helps build an individual's level of confidence not only for presentations but also as a life skill. Below are images of my slides for my presentation.

ACADEMIC SKILLS

Referencing is a way of getting legible evidence on a finding you have made, be it through books, journals and any other literary source of retrieving information.
In this task I studied how to reference using the Harvard referencing method. In the beginning of this study things seemed easy but as I progressed from referencing books, from books to journals,e-books till webpages I realised though the have a few similarities especially when it comes to the arrangement of the title to the author, there were a few differences in the rest of the parts that followed.
This task to me is a very enlightening one since I now know what referencing is and how to make a good solid reference to support any work I do.Below are some images of the most commonly accepted form of referencing known as Havard Reference.

ACADEMIC SKILLS

In this task, I had to read two books and give a careful analysis to the books.
The first book I read is titled "50 Great Myths About Aethism by Blackford Russell Schuklenk Udo". To begin with, aethists  are a group of people who do not believe in God or any god. This  book therefore talks about what aethism really is. It talks about what it entails  to be an aethist and people's opinions about aethism.
The book also exposes different kinds of aethists. It also talks about the reason behind aethism, how aethists relate the concepts of religion and science, the future of aethism and the rise of modern aethism.
In a sum total, this book is a good book which would recommend to everyone especially people who enjoy studying about different believes and concepts, since this book gives insight into who aethist really are and why they follow their set believes, instead of criticizing them from afar.

The second book is " Plant Chemical Biology by Overvoorde, Paul Audenaert, Dominique. This book is a scientific research book.

It talks about what plant chemical biology is about. It also talks about the sources of  small molecules and their uses in relation to the title.
Further more it identifies new tools and ways by which researchers use for this topic, how plant chemical biology is used to study both physical and cellular components of a plant, the purpose of studying plant chemical biology and how it is applied from lab to field.
To round it all up this book is a suitable book for all science oriented individuals and to some extent lovers of the environment.

DESIGN STUDIO CONCEPTUALISATION, TASK 2

MARK MAKING

This is the process of  developing marks, using various means such as paint, wood, brushes and even parts of your body like your hair and fingers. This done to create different art works, every mark can make meaning and send out a message depending on the designers intention for developing the mark.
In this task I developed a few marks of my own. Initially before I started this task I had no idea of what mark making was. This came as a challenge to me since I was dared to find what it really entails.
After researching a little I acquired a fair understanding of what mark making was. I went ahead to develop my first mark making samples, though I had a few glitches here and there I  managed to pull through with a few works.

After my first mark making attempt,I decided to do some more. Through out this task I applied simple tools such  as markers, felt pens, color pencils, spray color, paint, leaf, paint brush and my fingers. I ended up with a few more sophisticated marks which I was happy with.

By undertaking this task I learnt how creative I can be. Also I realized that I portray a message to an audience by using marks not necessarily drawing an image.

Reflection
Mark making is an interesting and exciting art technique and through research I found out that it is not only used in the field of graphic designing but also in other design fields, for instance in fashion design mark making is used in making tie and dye fabrics. Mark making can also be used on different occasions for different purposes, it can even be used for home decorations.
