Interactive Design for Game and Web Application

In The Beginning

From the on set my aim was to have a game which looked hand drawn or sketched and not software generated. The reason was that I dare to be different. I feel it is about time games came out that way which to me possesses more aesthetic qualities.
However somewhere along the line I was being a little discouraged. This was because time and over a lecturer kept telling me it was impossible and I had to generate everything using software.
This did not sit well with me and though I started generating everything in software I had to stop since it was contrary to my ideas.
I sort out to find solutions to my problems and after trying out a few approaches I got an answer.

Solution

A few semesters ago I did a module for animation. In this module most of my characters were sketched by hand scanned and colored in software. This was done with no problem and I did not have issues with pixels either. I realized that this was possible because of a technique we were taught which is known as the Inking Technique. I applied this inking technique to my game and like the process I followed in the animation module I scanned and applied color to it in software.
At the end of the day I came out with a completely hand sketched game from character to environment.

Reflection

This module has given me the opportunity to create a game which was both fun and to an extent quite difficult as well as time consuming. Also it made me realize that it is important for a designer to be open to suggestion and critiques so you can encourage yourself to do what everyone thinks is impossible and make it possible, as I have done.
